Should I do Pilates?
The question of "should versus want" recently came up during a conversation with a client. Her words were: “I’m realising I can do what I want rather than dreading what I think I should do.”
It’s exciting to witness my clients making sense of their experience living and moving in their bodies in real time. They’re learning to embrace what genuinely brings them joy, fulfilment, and strength. They’re also becoming open to challenging the pressures they face—whether from within themselves or society’s expectations of what it means to be "fit."
As Founder, Director and Pilates teacher of Rosy Movement—a Pilates studio based in Hawthorn and online, much of my role involves cutting through the misinformation and creating pathways of self-discovery for my clients. This helps them reach their fitness goals in a way that aligns with their lifestyle and values. Through personalised Pilates sessions and movement education programs—I provide tailored adjustments and insights to help each person move in ways that feel good to their body.
Moving our bodies in ways that bring us joy is often considered optional, whereas adhering to a rigid exercise routine is seen as essential to being fit. It’s a common thought: "I want to try a dance class, but I should be lifting weights at the gym." Or, "I want to stretch, but I should sign up for that 8-week fitness challenge." Or, "I want to walk around the park, but I should be running up that hill."
Sure, our physiology responds uniquely to different types of exercise, but what many overlook is that the specifics of what you do—how long you do it, or how intensely—matter far less than simply moving your body regularly. Whether it's a Pilates routine, a virtual Pilates class, or a simple walk in the park, staying active consistently is the key.
But let's be real—how often have the "shoulds" actually helped you keep moving in the long term?
You should do Pilates, if you want to do Pilates
The best activities are the ones that truly resonate with you—things that bring you joy, make you feel your best, and align with your values. These are the activities you’ll stick with over time, whether it’s Pilates, rock climbing, a simple walk, or any form of movement that feels good for your body.
To clarify, I’m not saying you should do whatever you want, all the time. You might not feel like doing your rehab exercises, but skipping them could hinder your recovery from injury or pain. Maybe you’re not a fan of exercise at all (and you’re not alone!), but neglecting movement altogether can have long-term consequences on your health and well-being.
What I’m suggesting here is to lean into the things you enjoy—whether it’s Pilates, gym, or even just getting outside for a walk. I understand the pressure to be fit tomorrow, but constantly stopping and starting based on what you “should” do won’t get you far.
Embrace what excites you, and over time, you’ll build strength, confidence, and resilience.
Your body is far more capable and adaptable than you might think, and when you begin to move with joy, it sets the foundation for a more sustainable fitness routine.
